Reflections from JAMOnline2020 on combining mindfulness with product management, two of my favourite topics brought together in one powerful talk.

Mindfulness in Product Management

Probably the highlight of #JAMOnline2020 for me, a talk that brought together two of my favourite topics: MINDFULNESS & PRODUCT.

What's JAM Online?

Started in 2015 as a small event to hear the stories behind our favourite products. One that brings together passionate makers who're striving to be better at their craft. JAM gives every maker the space to thrive through the power of real-life experiences.

I had the opportunity to physically attend JAM in 2018 courtesy of my then manager Julien Rizzo, and it changed my life. The best product conference I've ever attended. The virtual conference experience in 2020 did not disappoint!

What is Mindfulness?

Before looking into mindfulness in product management, let's take a step back to understand mindfulness, why it's important, and then look at how it fits in the world of product management.

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and aware in the current moment, without judgment. It's about paying attention to what's happening right now: your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, rather than getting caught up in the past or worrying about the future.

The benefits of mindfulness are well-documented:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved focus and concentration
  • Better decision-making
  • Enhanced creativity
  • Greater emotional resilience

Why Mindfulness Matters in Product Management

Product management is a high-pressure role. You're constantly juggling competing priorities, stakeholder expectations, and the day-to-day demands of shipping products. It's easy to get overwhelmed, reactive, and burned out.

Mindfulness offers a powerful antidote to these challenges. By cultivating a practice of present-moment awareness, product managers can:

  • Make better decisions: When you're not caught up in the noise of the moment, you can see situations more clearly and make more thoughtful decisions.
  • Listen more deeply to users: Mindfulness helps you truly listen to what users are saying, without rushing to judgment or solution.
  • Be more creative: A calm, open mind is more receptive to new ideas and connections.
  • Manage stress more effectively: By developing equanimity in the face of pressure, you can stay grounded and effective even in challenging situations.
  • Lead with more empathy: Mindfulness cultivates self-awareness, which in turn helps you better understand and empathize with the people around you.

The Intersection of Mindfulness and Product

The talk at JAMOnline2020 explored how mindfulness practices can be integrated into the day-to-day work of product management, from how you run meetings, to how you conduct user research, to how you prioritise your work and manage your time.

It was a powerful reminder that being a great product manager isn't just about the frameworks and tools. It's also about the mindset and state of being you bring to your work.

I left JAMOnline2020 with a renewed commitment to bringing more mindfulness into my product practice. If you're a product manager looking to improve your effectiveness and well-being, I highly recommend exploring mindfulness practices and how they can support your work.
